In many businesses, including those in the service sectors, the owners and employees spend most of their time doing the work, not thinking about future leadership. As a result, companies have trouble retaining talent and developing new leaders without strong leadership. SeamonWhiteside (SW+), a full-service site design firm throughout the Carolinas, is addressing the lack of leadership development with its Leadership Training and Mentorship Program.
The leadership program was created to provide current and future leaders with the tools they need for growth within SeamonWhiteside. With the hope that the program will aid in the development of the next generation of leaders by providing them with resources that will carry forward in their future roles. The program recently celebrated its second round of graduates, including Mary Martinich, Paul Talbert, Tommy Huang, and Trey Little.
This program addresses many universal business management models and practices, but it also speaks specifically to the unique culture and processes SW+ has developed over the past 37 years. Otherwise known as The “SeamonWhiteside Way,” this program pairs Mentors with Mentees who have already been identified as future leaders. This program follows a strict cadence of Topic expert meetings like Insurance, Contracts, Marketing, People Management, etc. In concert, the mentor has one-on-one meetings with mentees to discuss current situations, roles, and goals, to name a few topics. These one-on-ones are very individual and tailored to the uniqueness of the mentee and where they are in their career.
Leaders must train and develop their successors within the company. By creating a framework for communication between these two groups, they are investing in the long-term success of both future leaders and the company as a whole.
