Show at Charleston Area Convention Center Breathes Life into Famed Troubled Painter
By: Jeff Walker, Entertainment Writer
One does not necessarily have to be an art lover to enjoy ‘Beyond Van Gogh’ running Tuesdays through Sundays at the Charleston Area Convention Center until September 4th. As their website states ‘Beyond Van Gogh’ is a totally immersive experience using cutting edge projection technology to bring over 300 of Van Gogh’s works of art to life. Visitors are digitally engulfed in the painters’ mind.
Vincent Van Gogh is no doubt one of the most troubled yet profound artists to emerge during the 19th century. Having produced over 2000 pieces of art, the Dutch born impressionist did not become famous until years after his death. While he could not afford models Van Gogh painted mostly still life paintings, using peasants and everyday landscapes as inspiration. Not a fan of emerging photography Van Gogh painted over 40 self-portraits which are considered some of his most cherished pieces. His 1887 self-titled portrait is renowned.
Surprisingly nearly all of his now modern era masterpieces were painted during a ten-year period before his death in 1890. It wasn’t until the later part of his short career that Van Gogh became more expressive, incorporating bold colors into his artwork. ‘Vase with Fourteen Sunflowers’, ‘Vase with Twelve Sunflowers’, ‘Pink Roses in a Vase’, ‘Almond Blossom‘ and the priceless ‘Sunflowers’ were all painted in the last two years of his life.
Among Van Gogh’s most treasured art pieces are ‘The Starry Night’, ‘Wheat Fields’, ‘Olive Trees with the Alpilles in the Background’, ‘Cafe Terrace at Night’, ‘The Yellow House’ and ‘L’Allée des Alyscamps’. All immediately recognizable. His works can be seen in museums around the world. Standing in front of any of his masterpieces would be beyond awesome, however without travelling the world one could totally submerge themselves in ‘Beyond Van Gogh’. In some 30K square feet attendees are surrounded by a continual array of his timeless pieces of art, swirling on every inch of the curtained walls and floors.
Complete with an original symphony score and select passages more than 300 of Van Gogh’s works including self-portraits ‘Beyond Van Gogh’ allows guest to become transported to another dimension. The entry area provides a unique segue way into the history and makeup of Vincent van Gogh with empty picture frames leaving patrons to imagine themselves becoming part of the artwork that ultimately became the mystique behind one of the most influential yet troubled artists of all time.
Tour promoters Paquin Entertainment Group alongside Normal Studio use over 4 trillion content pixels as well as digital high-resolution technology to breathe life into arguably one of the most romantic and tortured artists ever to portray his personality on canvas. Considered a madman and a genius Vincent van Gogh’s paintings live on and inspire generations long after his death. Artists and admirers of impressionist art especially selections with bold brushwork techniques will find the travelling show transformational.
Admission starts at $36.99 for adults and $21.99 for children, plus ticketing fees. Tickets can be purchased online at https://vangoghcharleston.com/
