Charleston RiverDogs infielder Willy Vasquez has been named the Carolina League Player of the Week for the week of July 4-10, Minor League Baseball announced on Monday afternoon. Vasquez is the first RiverDogs position player to receive a weekly honor during the 2022 season. Austin Vernon was previously named Pitcher of the Week in May.
Vasquez played in all five games against the Augusta GreenJackets this week, combining to go 8-19 at the plate. He collected four doubles and a pair of home runs while driving in 11. He also worked a walk and scored six runs. Vasquez hit a go-ahead grand slam in the team's 8-4 win on Thursday, finishing the game with five RBI.
The Tampa Bay Rays originally signed Vasquez as an international free agent from the Dominican Republic in 2019. The 20-year-old is ranked as the #8 prospect in the Rays farm system by MLB Pipeline. He spent most of the 2021 season with the FCL Rays, batting .288 with 11 extra-base hits and 31 RBI. He joined the RiverDogs for the postseason and delivered a three-run triple during the decisive victory in game five.
The RiverDogs will travel to Lynchburg for their final series before the all-star break. The series begins on Tuesday night at Bank of the James Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm.
Individual tickets to all home games are still available. Season tickets, Dog-E Coin plans, and group tickets, including options to the Segra Club at Riley Park, are already available at riverdogs.com/tickets or by contacting the RiverDogs front office at 843-577-3647 (DOGS).
