Attorneys from Poulin | Willey are believed to have filed the first lawsuit on behalf of consumers who purchased Jif products recalled for potential Salmonella contamination. The J.M. Smucker Company is recalling its products nationwide after residents, of at least 12 states, have been infected by contaminated Jif peanut butter products. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in children, the elderly or people with compromised immune systems.
J.M. Smucker Co. the parent company for the popular peanut butter brand Jif, issued a recall on Friday, 5.20.22. The Food and Drug Administration along with the Centers for Disease Control are investigating the outbreak. All affected peanut butter products were manufactured in the Lexington, Kentucky facility. The first seven digits of any potentially affected product will end with 425. Additional Cargill, Inc. sweets that contain the peanut butter product have also been recalled.
The lawsuit states that: “[C]consumers do not know, and did not have a reason to know, that the Jif peanut butter products purchased were contaminated with Salmonella. Consumers expect the food they purchase to be safe for consumption and not contaminated by an organism ‘which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.’ “

We certainly expect and demand better from the companies making the food we consume…management of food borne illness is something we have controlled for a long time until just recently. This all too much reminds me of the Abbott Baby Formula cases. It seems as though companies are once again putting profits over people.
