Southern Living magazine recently released its sixth annual South's Best Awards, recognizing their readers' favorite Southern destinations and experiences. Among the numerous Charleston area businesses included, just one topped their designated category – Palmetto Brewing Company earned the title of The South’s Best Brewery.
The original Palmetto Brewery opened in 1888 and survived the hurricane of 1886, the earthquake of 1887, and the Civil War, but did not survive the push for prohibition. The business closed in 1916 due to bankruptcy and no beer was brewed in Charleston for almost 80 years.
Former engineers Ed Falkenstein and Louis Bruce revived Palmetto Brewing in 1993. Today, Palmetto is owned by the Pyatt family and is located on Huger Street.
