The Charleston Battery have teamed up with Volvo Cars USA in an historic sponsorship. The club announced Thursday an agreement with the iconic automaker, whose sole U.S. manufacturing presence is located in the Charleston area. The Volvo Spread Word Mark will be featured prominently on the front of the club's jerseys beginning with the upcoming 2022 regular season, which kicks off at Patriots Point on March 12, 2022, against FC Tulsa.
“We are tremendously proud to announce our collaboration with Volvo Cars and feature such an iconic brand on the front of our team's jerseys,” said Battery Executive Chairman Rob Salvatore. “Partnering with a company that carries such global recognition was important to us as we sought a front-of-kit partner. However, Volvo Cars' significant commitment to the Charleston community was an even bigger draw to us and what makes this collaboration a perfect fit.”
In 2015, Volvo Cars broke ground on its first U.S. plant in Ridgeville, S.C., and today the 2.3 million sq. ft. facility produces the S60 mid-size sedan. The automaker plans to expand the facility's capacity in the coming years as it begins production of its next-generation electric vehicle, adding several-hundred new jobs in the process.
“Volvo Cars is proud of our role within the Charleston community,” said David Stenström, Vice President, Manufacturing, Americas, and Plant Manager, Volvo Car Charleston Plant. “As a sponsor for the Charleston Battery, we hope to further connect with the Lowcountry, share our exciting new vehicles, and spread our message of safety and sustainability.”
Additionally, the partnership includes Volvo Cars' presence at Patriots Point with new hospitality areas in the Battery Pavilion. There, fans can get an up-close look at Volvo Cars' latest models.
“Volvo Cars' stewardship is clear – employing so many of our fans, our neighbors,” added Scott Krenitski, the Battery's president of business operations. “As we continue to bring the best of Charleston together at Patriots Point, we couldn't be more excited and look forward to giving fans a chance to see the great work by Volvo Cars happening right in our backyard.”
The new home and away jerseys, debuted Thursday, will feature the Volvo Spread Word Mark on their fronts and introduce an entirely new design for the Battery's 30th season. Fans will recognize elements from three decades of Battery history in the new home kits, whereas the new away kits feature an entirely new look, synonymous with the club's new era at Patriots Point.
The new home and away jerseys for the 2022 season are now available for purchase at the Battery's online team store by visiting shop.charlestonbattery.com.
