Charleston County's comment period for the Better North Bridge project is open until March 3, 2022. There are three alternatives in front of the public, all of which call for a separate bicycle and pedestrian bridge adjacent to the existing North Bridge between West Ashley and North Charleston. Through studies conducted by the County in 2008 and 2011, this proposal was identified as the solution to safely get people on bikes and foot over the river. Since 2015, four people have been killed while biking over the bridge, and more have been seriously injured.
In the final weeks of February, Charleston Moves will host a series of outdoor tabling sessions on the West Ashley and North Charleston sides of bridge to ensure all members of the public have a chance to participate, particularly those without the time to have attended the in-person meetings, or without reliable internet access to comment online. Members of the public are encouraged to drop by Charleston Moves' upcoming tabling opportunities, or weigh in online at BetterNorthBridge.com.
