Today, the city of Charleston issued the following statement in regard to S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson's February 17th, 2022 letter regarding the removal of the “Robert E. Lee Memorial Highway” marker (right) on the Charleston School of Math + Science’s property of February 17, 2022:
“Courts exist to resolve sincere differences of legal opinion, which is what we have in this case. A.G. Wilson believes the Heritage Act applies, the city’s legal department disagrees, and the courts will make the final determination. That’s exactly the way the system is supposed to work, and the city is prepared to begin that process as soon as it’s called upon to do so.” — City spokesman Jack O’Toole
Earlier today, the city of Charleston shared information about their decision to remove the marker. That statement said in part, “After examining the facts and the law carefully, the legal department concluded that removal or relocation of the marker was allowed under the Heritage Act.”
