PURE Theatre today announced its upcoming show, Ben Butler by Richard Strand. The show will run the first two weeks in February and then will return for the first two weeks in March at the Cannon Street Arts Center.
When an escaped slave shows up at Fort Monroe demanding sanctuary, General Benjamin Butler is faced with an impossible moral dilemma—follow the letter of the law or make a game-changing move that could alter the course of U.S. history?
Directed by PURE Core Ensemble member Mark Landis, the show will feature Core Ensemble members R.W. Smith, Michael Smallwood, Josh Wilhoit and Addison Dent. Creative team includes Richard Heffner as set and lighting designer, Mark Landis as sound designer and Miles Boinest as stage manager.
Richard Strand is the author of The Bug and The Death of Zukasky, both of which premiered at Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Humana Festival. More recently he wrote Ben Butler, which premiered at New Jersey Repertory Company and was moved Off-Broadway to 59E59 Theaters. He was previously a professor, technical director and set designer teaching classes in stagecraft, history of theater and playwriting at Mt. San Antonio College.
Tickets range from $28 to $40. There will be two Pay-What-You-Will performances on Wednesday, February 9th, and Wednesday, March 9th, and $10 student tickets are available at the door. The show is also available through the All-Access Flex Pass, now available for four or eight tickets.
