Joe Cunningham Breaks Fundraising Record in First Quarter of the SC Governor’s Race

Former U.S. Representative Joe Cunningham, a Democratic candidate for Governor, announced on Tuesday that he has broken the fundraising record for a South Carolina Democratic gubernatorial challenger in their initial fundraising quarter.

Cunningham raised $634,000 since entering the race on April 26th and 84% of those donations came from South Carolina donors. The record was previously held by Vincent Sheheen, who raised $611,314 in the first quarter of his gubernatorial campaign in 2014.

Cunningham’s fundraising by the numbers (according to his campaign):

  • Total raised: $634,000
  • Cash on hand: $428,000
  • % from South Carolina: 84%
  • PAC money: $0

“I am incredibly humbled by the strength of the grassroots support we have received since announcing our campaign for governor,” said Cunningham. “People are fired up about bringing South Carolina out of the past and into the future and I am ready to help lead the way. As governor, I will fight to raise teacher pay, expand Medicaid, protect and expand voting rights, tackle climate change, and make criminal justice reform a reality. But none of these things will happen unless we win next November and I am prepared to do just that. We are building a campaign unlike anything South Carolina has ever seen and we will have the resources to communicate our message to voters across this state. I know what it takes to win tough races; I’ve done it before and I’m going to do it again.”

Cunningham is currently on a 46-county tour of the state, the latest stop of which will be in Dorchester County on Thursday, July 8th.
