On Friday, March 8, 2019, PURE Theatre will open the third production of its 16th season: Small Mouth Sounds by Bess Wohl. The 2016 Critics' Pick by New York Times, New York Magazine, and Time Out New York, Small Mouth Sounds finds six runaways from city life on a silent retreat in the overwhelming quiet of the woods. As these strangers confront internal demons both profound and absurd, their vows of silence collide with the achingly human need to connect. Filled with awkward humor, this strange and compassionate new play asks how we address life's biggest questions when words fail us.
“I'm very excited for this play,” says Director and PURE Co-Founder/Core Ensemble Member, Rodney Lee Rogers. “It really lives in those wonderful silences that scream of human want and need. They're the type of silences usually reserved for film, but Bess Wohl has really found a way to make them extraordinarily theatrical. It's a very unique play and vision.”
Featuring actors both familiar and new to PURE, the cast for Small Mouth Sounds includes Core Ensemble Members Scott Smith-Pattison, Joel Watson, Erin Wilson, and Laurens Wilson. New to PURE are Edie Allen, Sarah Callahan Black, and Chris McLernon.
Only the second production in their new home on Cannon Street, Small Mouth Sounds will run for an abbreviated three-week period Friday, March 8 through Saturday, March 23.
Tickets for Small Mouth Sounds are on sale now at puretheatre.org and at the PURE Theatre box office. Advance purchases are strongly recommended.
PURE Theatre is located at 134 Cannon Street.
