On Thursday, June 27th, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC-01) will host SC-01's winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition in Washington, D.C. This year’s first place winner is Karen McDonell of Hilton Head High School. Her winning piece, “Lady of the Lake,” (pictured) will be featured in the U.S. Capitol along with other winners from every state across the country for an entire year.
This year, Mace’s office received artwork from 8 schools across the district in various mediums, including photographs, digital art, block print, colored pencil, charcoal, and paint.
"Lady of the Lake" by Karen McDonnell is a captivating black-and-white photograph that features a serene lakeside scene. The focal point is a woman standing gracefully in shallow water, her figure reflected in the calm surface, with two boats gently floating in the background. The composition, enhanced by skillful use of Photoshop, evokes a sense of tranquility and ethereal beauty, making it a striking piece of visual art.
“Congratulations to Karen McDonell, this year's winner of the Congressional Art Competition,” said Rep. Mace. “Each year, I'm struck by the remarkable artwork created by our region's young artists, and this year was no exception. I extend my congratulations and heartfelt thanks to all the talented students who participated in this program, as well as the teachers and parents who supported them. I cannot wait to see the outstanding talent of the Lowcountry displayed in the halls of Congress for the coming year!
