Lowcountry Food Bank held its first produce distribution in the Charleston area with its new, Publix Charities-donated mobile pantry truck. The food distribution took place on Tuesday, April 23rd at Westview Elementary School in Goose Creek.
Mobile food trucks are equipped to reach hard to reach communities, including rural areas that have no grocery stores, and designed to reach neighbors who need food assistance where they are. Mobile pantry trucks enable fast, flexible delivery of perishable food, and they help break down barriers that prevent families, students, seniors, and others from getting access to healthy food.
"Now we're even better able to get our neighbors the food they need. This truck has been in the works for a long time," said Nick Osborne, Lowcountry Food Bank President and CEO. "This truck that Publix Charities donated to us gives us a lot more flexibility in terms of where we can go and how we can reach our neighbors who need access to healthy food. We can conduct even more food distributions to suit unique situations."
Mobile pantry trucks can also help cut down on food waste and the high cost associated with that, because refrigerated mobile pantry trucks help extend the life of fresh fruits and vegetables.
“Helping provide food to our neighbors in need is at the heart of our philanthropic efforts at Publix," said Jared Glover, Publix Super Markets, Inc. Media Relations Manager. “We’re thankful to the Lowcountry Food Bank for their continued support of hunger alleviation efforts in the areas we serve. Their support and our contributions from Publix Super Markets Charities provide nourishment and better the lives of families and individuals in our communities. We’re proud to do good, together.”
