A popular Charleston musician was killed in a police-involved shooting in Park Circle on Friday, June 28th. Quentin Ravenel, 34, died just after 9 pm at Trident Medical Center after being shot multiple times on Alpha Street in North Charleston, the Charleston County Coroner said.
Ravenel was well-known in the community and was even named Charleston City Paper's Percussionist of the Year in 2015 and Drummer of the Year in 2016. He had been performing around the Charleston area for more than a decade in bands like the Quentin Ravenel Experience, The Very Hypnotic Soul Band, Quentin Ravenel & Friends, and Ben Fagan and the Holy City Hooligans, which was named the city's Soul/R&B Band of the Year in 2015.
According to the Post & Courier, Ravenel had also performed at the Billboard Music Awards, the EDC Festival in Las Vegas, and NBA All-Star Weekend.
The North Charleston Police Department said that on June 28th an officer responded to the 5000 block of Braddock Avenue about a man (Ravenel) who was "acting in an erratic manner and making incoherent statements." Officers located Ravenel in a confrontation with a homeowner outside a residence on Alpha Street. Officers then attempted to detain him, but Ravenel managed to break free and enter the residence. According to police, that is when both the homeowner and police officer fired shots. At this time, it is unknown whose bullet killed Ravenel and the officer has not been identified.
According to ABC News 4, Ravenel was staying at the home he entered and was friends with the homeowner.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is the agency handling the on-going investigation.
