The Charleston-North Charleston market has been named the No. 3 U.S. "growth city of 2023," according to the U-Haul Growth Index that analyzes one-way customer moves during the past year.
One-way U-Haul customers arriving in Charleston and North Charleston increased 3% from 2022 while departures fell 1%. As a result, the Silicon Harbor catapulted seven spots from its ranking as the 10th leading growth market a year ago.
Do-it-yourself movers arriving in Charleston-North Charleston accounted for 52.2% of all one-way U-Haul traffic in and out of the market (47.8% departures) in 2023.
U-Haul calculates growth cities by each city’s net gain (or loss) of one-way equipment from customer transactions in a calendar year. The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer and U-Box® moving container transactions that occur annually across the U.S. and Canada.
Neighboring cities in U-Haul markets are often packaged together for migration trends purposes.
While U-Haul migration trends do not correlate directly to population or economic growth, the U-Haul Growth Index is an effective gauge of how well states and cities are attracting and maintaining residents.
