Charleston Moves dedicates May as Mobility Month, an annual celebration of complete streets. With the belief that you should be safe to move how you choose, where you choose, and when you choose, the nonprofit organization’s event series aims to rally the community around transportation priorities and opportunities to advocate, while elevating the collective call for comfortable, connected and equitable space for vulnerable road users.
The program, with generous support from sponsors and community partners, includes something for everyone. Here’s the line-up:
May 2 | Safe Streets on Tap » Ring in Mobility Month 2024 with a celebratory community kickoff at Munkle Brewing Company
May 8 | Union Pier: Mobility Nexus Through the Centuries » Join Dr. Nic Butler of the Charleston County Public Library for an illustrated review of historic pathways to, from, and through the waterfront site (RSVP)
May 15 | Ride of Silence » Bicycle across the North Bridge with a police escort as part of a critical mass memorial ride and championing of the Better North Bridge project, with a post-ride gathering at Holy City Brewing (RSVP and required waiver)
May 17 | Light the Night » Pop by to celebrate National Bike to Work Day with free bike lights, food and community resources on the lawn of Neighbors Together in North Charleston
May 23 | People Power Happy Hour » Gather around the table with the staff of Charleston Moves to engage on the who, what, why and how of our movement at Edmund’s Oast Brewing Co. & Taproom (RSVP, limited capacity)
May 25 | Charleston Transportation History & Civil Rights » Guided walking tour of the historic district with Walk & Talk Charleston exploring the development of mobility in the city, and how car-dominance has divided the community (Buy tickets, limited capacity)
Transportation is at the crossroads of livability and quality of life. It impacts where people choose (and/or can afford to) live and work, how they feed their families and access green and blue spaces, who they commune with and how they spend down time or exercise. Mobility and access shapes everyone's day-to-day experiences, and how enjoyable those experiences are — and can become.
