Carolina and Kevin Jewett, the founders of Tínto y Crema, today announced their newest culinary venture, Tínto Café and Provisions. The duo says Tínto will represent a culmination of Carolina Jewett’s rich heritage and culinary passion.
Carolina Jewett comes from a lineage deeply rooted in coffee roasting and baking culture. The names of Tínto y Crema and Tínto Café and Provisions pay homage to her heritage. Her Colombian father and Argentinian mother inspired the choice of "Tínto" – meaning "coffee" in Colombia and "red wine" in Argentina – creating a fusion of cultures in Charleston's culinary scene.
“I work hard to stick with local family-owned businesses to make exceptional products, guaranteeing the freshest, most authentic tastes” Carolina Jewett said. “We foster tradition and cherish recipes in hopes of bringing the highest quality products directly to members of the Charleston community.”
She grew up surrounded by South American influences with a Colombian father and an Argentinian mother. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Carolina’s family immigrated to the United States in 1985 and settled in Charleston in 1989. Her father's lineage is associated with the ‘cafeteros’ who discovered how the climatic conditions of the Andes Mountains provided the best conditions for growing and roasting coffee beans.
Carolina’s father, Francisco Davila, founded Coffee Roasters of Charleston in 1991, drawing on their family's extensive coffee heritage. Davila curated and imported arabica coffee beans, roasting them in small batches to supply local restaurants and retailers.
Carolina and her husband, Kevin (pictured), joined the family business of small-batch coffee roasting in 2012, helping build Coffee Roasters of Charleston into a national brand. Since acquiring the former Belgian Gelato Café in 2019 and rebranding to what is now known as Tínto y Crema in 2021, the Jewett’s have sustained their reputation for providing gourmet gelato, fine wines, and coffee in Charleston.
Inspired by her mother’s French-Argentinian heritage and the summers that Carolina spent in France with her grandparents as a child, their newest venture Tínto Café and Provisions will continue to serve the Jewett’s signature coffee and gelato alongside a selection of daily fresh baked breads.
The Jewetts are excited to unveil their second concept in June 2024. Tínto Café and Provisions will be located at 45 John Street.
