The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department will sponsor the annual Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative concert by the popular and internationally acclaimed Lowcountry Voices on Saturday, January 13, 2023, at 5 pm. The concert, titled The Dream Lives On, will take place at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, located at 7396 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston. Admission is free. All are welcome.
For The Dream Lives On, Lowcountry Voices (LCV), a multicultural and ethnically diverse choral performing will perform under the musical direction of Nathan L. Nelson and will be joined by special guests the Mount Moriah Sanctuary Choir. The free concert will pay tribute to the memory and enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his vision for a more just and inclusive society. Musical selections will honor Dr. King himself and provide strength and encouragement to those who are still striving to make his dream a reality.
LCV, known as the choir with the authentic, multi-colored kente cloth stoles, consists of singers ranging from high school students to senior and seasoned vocalists. The choir is dedicated to performing a standard choral repertoire with special emphasis on African American music, including Black gospel, jazz, and spirituals. The 501(c)(3) performing arts organization focuses on these genres as they were nurtured and performed in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. LCV has performed in multiple venues throughout South Carolina, as well as across the United States and abroad. The group has shared the stage with music legend James Taylor, was honored to sing at the services for the Honorable Reverend Clementa Pinckney, the slain pastor of the Mother Emanuel AME tragedy, and has participated in many collaborations with individuals and groups such as the North Charleston Pops!, artist Jonathan Green, and African American choral music icon Roland Carter.
