The International African American Museum (IAAM) will host a special evening of music and poetry with Jessica Care Moore, internationally acclaimed poet, performance artist, and producer, on February 16 at the museum. “From Dreams to Reality: An Evening of Poetry & Music” is set to honor the perseverance, achievements, and hard-fought victories of African Americans throughout history and into the present.
The event will be held from 6:30 – 8:00 pm on Friday, February 16th, at the IAAM, located at 14 Wharfside Street, Charleston, S.C. 29401. jessica Care moore’s acoustic poetry performance will feature an opening performance by Charleston Poet Laureate Asiah Mae, and the evening will be DJ'd by DJ Rubin. Tickets, which are $25 each, can be purchased here.
jessica Care moore is the author of The Words Don’t Fit in My Mouth, God is Not an American, Sunlight Through Bullet Holes, and We Want Our Bodies Back, among other pieces. She is also the CEO of Moore Black Press, founder of the Care moore Foundation, and executive producer of BLACK WOMEN ROCK! In 2013, she received the Alain Locke Award from the Detroit Institute of Arts. Her work is featured at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
"I remember when jessica Care moore won the Apollo amateur night five-times with poems, and those growing up in the 90s likely recall how brutal those audiences could be," said Malika N. Pryor, chief learning and engagement officer at IAAM. "It made a phenomenal impact on the culture, and that moment reverberated for years to come as slam poetry made its way into the mainstream. We often see moore with a full band, but this performance will be intimate. To hear her now, nearly 30 years later, as a world-renowned poet and performer – as profound in her prose as she is electric in her delivery – will be an absolute treat for the audience!"
