The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (BVRE) is partnering with Vet the Vote, a national initiative that recruits veterans to volunteer as poll workers during elections, to launch Operation: Civic Duty, a county-wide effort to engage veterans as poll workers.
To encourage Charleston County veterans to serve as poll workers in their communities in 2024, BVRE Executive Director Isaac Cramer is hosting a public event with Vet the Vote, as follows:
- WHEN: May 16, 2024, 10:30 am to 11:30 am
- WHERE: USS USS Yorktown CV-10, 40 Patriots Point Road Mount Pleasant, SC 29464
During the event, veterans and military family members will have the opportunity to talk with Charleston County election officials and current poll workers, many of them veterans, who will explain the process to participants each step of the way and answer any questions about how elections work in Charleston County.
Vet the Vote gives Charleston County veterans the opportunity to continue to serve their country and local communities by participating in the election process. Attendees will get a firsthand look at how elections in Charleston County are run.
Charleston County prides itself on the deep connections with the military community. The county is home to close to 30,000 veterans and this community has a long tradition of stepping forward to serve their neighbors.
Charleston County veterans who are interested in attending should arrive anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Media are highly encouraged to attend between 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Veterans and military family members who plan to attend the event should register using the following link by 5:00 p.m. on 5/15/2024: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/vet-the-vote-charleston-county-event-tickets-890936193137
Isaac Cramer, Executive Director Charleston County BVRE: “Our partnership with Vet the Vote is more than just an initiative; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of service that thrives within our veterans. Their mission does not end when they return home; it evolves. By stepping forward as poll workers, they continue to defend our democracy and ensure every voice is heard.”
Ellen Gustafson, Executive Director, We the Veterans & Military Families and Co-Founder, Vet the Vote Coalition: “I'm thrilled to have Vet the Vote join hands with veterans in Charleston County to serve as part of Operation: Civic Duty. Our goal is to ensure veterans and military family members are aware of how they can serve the country and their community again as poll workers this year.”
