On Friday, June 10th, the Town of Summerville will once again celebrate National Iced Tea Day by attempting to break the World Record for the Largest Iced Tea ever made. The town set the record last June, but the City of Baltimore, Maryland bested it in October 2015.
Since Summerville bills itself as the “Birthplace of Sweet Tea,” the record-breaking iced beverage will indeed be sweet tea.
During the early afternoon, a group will start making a single 2,400 gallon glass of tea using local tea leaves from the Charleston Tea Plantation and sugar from Dixie Crystals. The “Record Smashing Tea Party” begins at 5 pm and will include the record-breaking attempt, live music, food vendors, and more. Plus, if all goes according to plan, an adjudicator from the Guinness Book of World Records will verify and present the record for the “World’s Largest Iced Tea” just before the party.
During the event, attendees can purchase a souvenir Mason Jar for $5 and enjoy as much tea as they’d like. The party will be held outside of the Summerville Town Hall located at 200 S. Main St.
