“I’m proud to announce I plan to form an exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for my candidacy in the United States of South Carolina.” – Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report (1/12/12)
And with that, Charleston’s own Stephen Colbert appears to be running for President…again…in the State of South Carolina only…again. Colbert tried this four years ago, but was ultimately shot down. He may be in for another let down, as the Huffington Post reports: “Colbert missed the November 1 filing deadline to get his name on the GOP primary ballot in South Carolina, and according to the South Carolina Election Commission, there’s no write-in space on the electronic and paper primary ballots.”
Despite these long odds, South Carolina voters appear to back Colbert. He finished ahead of Jon Hunstman in a recent poll taken in the state. “Clearly my fellow South Caroliniacs see me as the only Mitternative,” Colbert said.
