North Augusta, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs Saturday night game with the Augusta GreenJackets was suspended by rain in the middle of the 11th inning with the RiverDogs holding a 2-1 lead. As the team took the field for the bottom of the frame, the skies opened up and rain began to fall harder as the umpires called for the tarp. The game will be resumed at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, with the regularly scheduled nine-inning contest to follow.
The starting pitchers matched each other with scoreless innings for the duration of their time on the mound. RiverDogs starter Drew Dowd worked a career-high 6.0 scoreless innings, scattering four hits with help from three double plays. Adam Maier of Augusta worked 5.0 scoreless frames with six strikeouts.
The first couple of arms to emerge from the bullpen continued the trend with Hayden Snelsire whiffing six over 3.0 scoreless frames and Mitch Farris keeping the RiverDogs off the board over 3.2 frames.
As a result, the teams entered extra innings in a scoreless stalemate. A wild pitch from Reibyn Corona moved the placed runner, Ricardo Gonzalez, to third base. He raced home on a chopper to first by Cristopher Barete. When the throw bounced away from Alexander Martinez at the plate, Barete advanced to second. Narciso Polanco struck out in the next at-bat, but Adrian Santana rolled a base hit into left field with two outs. P.O. Boucher made an accurate throw to the plate to cut down Barete trying to score the insurance run. Manager Sean Smedley was ejected when he argued for catcher’s interference on the throw home.
Will Stevens nearly ended the game in the bottom of the inning, retiring Robert Gonzalez on a groundball and Boucher with a strikeout. Martinez had other ideas, punching an RBI single into left that tied the score.
The RiverDogs regained the lead with two outs in the 11th. Noah Myers hammered a double off the center field wall to drive in Santana. Two walks loaded the bases before Bryan Broecker struck out to end the inning.
The RiverDogs continue their hunt for a fourth-consecutive Carolina League championship in 2024. The full schedule of games is available here.
