The Round of a Lifetime Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that enriches the lives of congenital heart patients through world-class golf experiences, is thrilled to announce its 23rd recipient, Alex Sekela, will be playing The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island on Dec. 14th.
Round Of A Lifetime was established in 2010 to preserve the memory of a dear friend, Andrew Maciey, who passed away from a congenital heart defect at the age of 24. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide the opportunity for those suffering from congenital heart disease and their loved ones to play an unforgettable round of golf at a world-class course, all expenses-paid. So far the organization has sent 22 recipients to courses around the world to play their Round Of A Lifetime, including Pebble Beach, Pinehurst No. 2, TPC Sawgrass and Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland.
Sekela is a high school student from Cape May, New Jersey. When he was three years old, he was diagnosed with Vascular Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that can cause severe bleeding and internal injuries. Being unable to play contact sports led Alex to find the game of golf early. He started at age 5 when he received his first set of golf clubs from Santa. Now a teenager, he has joined the high school golf team and golfs often with friends, family and on his own. After having to postpone his round for over a year, Alex will be teeing off at the Ocean Course on Sunday with his father.
“Everyone at Kiawah Island Golf Resort is thrilled to have Alex fulfil his dream of playing a round on The Ocean Course,” said Bryan Hunter, Director of Public Relations, Kiawah Island Golf Resort. “We are grateful to Round of a Lifetime Foundation for making this dream a reality for Alex as well as for numerous golfers throughout the country who live with Congenital Heart Defects. By fulfilling dreams like Alex’s, the foundation’s important work helps create awareness that people living with a heart defect do not have to forgo their dreams. We will do everything possible to ensure Alex’s experience on The Ocean Course lives up to his expectations, and we wish him the best of luck not only for a memorable round but for all his future endeavors.”
