This December 21-23, ten young men from the Charleston area will lace up their shoes and embark on a powerful, multi-day relay run, from Furman University to Charleston Southern University in memory of beloved coach, mentor, and community leader Brian Johnson.
Coach Johnson, a devoted husband, father, teacher, and cornerstone of the Lowcountry running community, passed away earlier this year, leaving an immeasurable impact on thousands of students, athletes, families, and fellow coaches. Known for his kindness, encouragement, integrity, and ability to bring out the best in every athlete, he served as coach for three local college programs and led the Academic Magnet High School boys’ cross country and track and field teams for 10 years.
“Brian didn’t just coach athletes—he helped shape students,” said members of the Academic Magnet relay team. “His lessons weren’t only about running. They were about character, perseverance, and community.”
This year’s tribute relay, organized by the Academic Magnet boys’ cross country team, will be run by former athletes who were directly coached by Johnson. The team includes his two sons, who competed for Academic Magnet High School and the Mount Pleasant Track Club. Each runner carries a personal connection to Coach Johnson, united by his belief that every young person is capable of more than they realize.
A Relay Rooted in Legacy, Gratitude, and Purpose
The symbolic route—beginning at Furman University and ending at Charleston Southern University, Coach Johnson’s alma maters—reflects his lifelong dedication to both education and athletic excellence. The relay also honors organizations that were meaningful to Johnson, reinforcing his commitment to community and service.
As they put in more than 200 miles over multiple days, the athletes will run not only for their coach, but for the values he tirelessly instilled: discipline, compassion, teamwork, and joy in the journey.
Giving Back to the Communities Brian Loved
The goal of this relay is not only to celebrate Brian’s life, but to give back in a way that reflects his spirit of generosity and service. Through sponsorships and community support, the team aims to raise funds that will be donated directly to three organizations that held deep meaning for Brian, in Mount Pleasant Track Club, Academic Magnet Boys’ Cross Country Team, and The Lonon Foundation.
“Brian was a wonderful person and he leaves behind a legacy to all who knew him,” said founder of The Lonon Foundation, Anna Lonon. “We are so proud to know Peyton and Dylan. What a tremendous way to honor their Dad as well as raise awareness for kids impacted by a parent’s cancer.”
