The USL Championship announced Tuesday that Charleston Battery players Luis Zamudio and Cal Jennings and Head Coach Ben Pirmann were named to the league’s Week 2 Team of the Week. The honors put a bow on the Battery’s triumphant Week 2 after the 2-0 victory over Rhode Island FC.
It is the first set of Team of the Week honors for the club in 2025. Juan David Torres also earned an honorable mention with a spot on the Bench following his performance of one assist and a match-high four chances created.
Zamudio was the top goalkeeper in Week 2 after posting his first shutout of 2025. The shot-stopper notched two saves, both from inside the box, two punches, one high claim and six clearances. Zamudio’s assertive action in front of goal was paramount to neutralizing the reigning Eastern Conference champions.
Jennings was dominant against Rhode Island, opening his Battery account in sensational style with a brace in the first half. Jennings’ first goal was an athletic feat, shielding the ball on a corner kick before turning and shooting off the volley in one swift motion. His second also came off a corner kick, heading home the service provided by Torres to the near post.
Pirmann earned Coach of the Week honors after his tactical adjustments after Week 1 proved decisive against Rhode Island. The Battery deployed a different formation with some personnel changes in the starting lineup which unlocked the offense’s firepower for their first win over the Ocean State club. At the same time, the defense stayed stingy and held Rhode Island without a shot on target until the 80th minute.
The three selections are the club’s first of the year after earning 30 Team of the Week honors in 2024.
Charleston will have a bye next weekend and their next match won’t be until the away fixture vs. North Carolina FC on Sat., March 29. The Battery’s next home match is on Sat., April 5, at 5:30 p.m. ET against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Tickets for the home game are on sale now via SeatGeek.com, the club’s exclusive digital ticketing provider.
