Monday afternoon, the Big South Conference announced its Player of the Week for the second week of the college basketball season: Charleston Southern's Brycen Blaine.
No player in the Big South—and perhaps in the entire country—matched Blaine's statistical output over the weekly period. In league rankings, he finished 1st in scoring (28.7 ppg) by nearly a 10-point margin (9.67 ahead of second place), T-2nd in assists (5.0), T-6th in steals (1.7), and 11th in rebounds (6.7). His shooting numbers were just as eye-catching. Blaine ranked 1st in three-pointers made (16), doubling second place (8 by USCU's Carmelo Adkins), 3rd in three-point percentage (43.2%), and 9th in field-goal percentage (46.7%). He also finished T-1st in free-throw percentage (100%), going a perfect 14-for-14—tied for the most attempts among any player inside the league's top 15 in percentage.
CSU's Monday victory over The Citadel was not only a big moment for the city of Charleston—it was also the night the Bulldogs learned exactly who Blaine was. He erupted for 42 points (the most by any player in the country at that time), 11 rebounds, and 8 assists with just one turnover, becoming the first player in Division I history to record that level of volume in all three categories in a single game. His 42-point effort was the first 40-plus outing by a CSU player since 2007. It was also the night he scored his 300th career point.
On Thursday against Alabama A&M, CSU trailed by nine with 14 minutes remaining before Blaine rattled off 10 straight Buccaneer points to pull his team within one—setting up a lead they would claim on the next possession. At the Bulldog Bash in Huntsville over the weekend, Blaine totaled 44 points across the two games, including eight made three-pointers.
