Lee Johnson, a Democrat running for the U.S. Senate against Lindsey Graham, released the following statement in response to Lindsey Graham and Senate Republicans passing the “One Big Beautiful Bill” on Tuesday:
“This bill will devastate South Carolina,” Johnson said. “Its impacts rest squarely on the shoulders of Lindsey Graham, who was the bill’s biggest cheerleader in the Senate. This bill will rip away $20 billion in Medicaid funds for our state, threatening healthcare for the 1.1 million South Carolinians who rely on Medicaid. It will cause rural hospitals to shut down. It will cut SNAP funding, which over half a million people in South Carolina depend on for food. It will drive up energy costs for folks already struggling to make ends meet. And on top of that, it will add trillions of dollars to the national deficit. This disastrous bill was one vote away from being blocked. Lindsey could have stopped it. But he didn’t, because he does not care about South Carolina."
