Statement from the South Carolina Senate Democratic Caucus On The Regulation Of Hemp-Derived Products:
“So it’s not the will of the people, but the will of this body.” — Sen. Deon Tedder
Overnight, South Carolina Senate Democrats stood together with a clear purpose: to protect and strengthen the economic future of our state and all of her citizens.
Across South Carolina, the hemp industry is already creating real economic opportunity, supporting farmers, small businesses, and rural communities. This sector has generated tens of millions of dollars in economic activity in our state, while contributing to job creation and new business development.
Nationally, this is a $28+ billion industry supporting more than 300,000 jobs and billions in wages, demonstrating the scale of opportunity states like South Carolina have to either grow or lose depending on the decisions we make.
For too long, this marketplace has operated under a patchwork of unclear rules, creating uncertainty for businesses, workers, and consumers alike. That kind of instability puts South Carolina at a competitive disadvantage.
That’s why our caucus supported a framework that brings order, clarity, and accountability to this space, because economic development requires stability. Businesses cannot invest, hire, or expand in South Carolina if the rules are inconsistent or constantly shifting.
This vote was about ensuring South Carolina remains competitive, forward-looking, and open for responsible business. It was about protecting jobs, supporting our agricultural economy, and making sure opportunity reaches every corner of our state.
At the same time, we recognize that economic growth and public safety must go hand in hand. That is why we supported a measured approach that establishes clear guardrails while preserving the ability for legitimate businesses to operate and succeed.
South Carolina Senate Democrats will always stand for policies that grow our economy, support working families, and position our state for long-term success.
Tonight, we did exactly that.
