South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Christale Spain released the following statement in response to Gov. Henry McMaster’s announcement that he will call the General Assembly back into special session for congressional redistricting:
“Governor McMaster has gone back on his word to the people of South Carolina.
Earlier this month, he said he would leave this issue to the legislature. But after Trump failed to get all of the Republicans in the State Senate to fall in line, the Governor stepped in to force a special session and continue this reckless push to redraw congressional maps in the middle of an election year.
South Carolinians are watching in real time as Republican leaders attempt to change the rules to fit their political agenda with no consideration for the ballots that have already been cast. This is about power, plain and simple, and it sends a dangerous message to voters across our state.
Governor McMaster has chosen Donald J. Trump over the people of South Carolina, and Democrats will continue fighting to protect fair elections and the voices of every voter in our state.”
