Sen. Tameika Isaac Devine released the following statement on the passing of Harriet Hancock:
"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Harriet Hancock, a dear friend and a courageous advocate for LGBTQ+ South Carolinians. When people faced isolation and prejudice, Harriet stood beside them. She helped establish South Carolina’s first PFLAG chapter, co-founded Palmetto AIDS Life Support Services, and helped organize our state’s first Pride March.
"Harriet gave people a place to belong and the courage to be seen. I will miss her friendship, her warmth, and her unwavering commitment to others. My heart is with her family and everyone whose life she touched. May we honor her by continuing the work she began."
