Columbia, SC – The South Carolina Democratic Party is calling on Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey to "disclose just how much he has profited from his private law practice while leading the charge on tort reform efforts that would primarily benefit corporate interests and insurance companies."
“South Carolinians deserve to know whether Senator Massey is pushing this legislation in the best interest of working families—or his own bank account,” said SCDP Executive Director Jay Parmley. “It’s no secret that his law firm specializes in defending businesses and insurance companies. The question is, how much has he personally made off this system, and is that why he’s trying to tilt the scales even further in favor of corporations at the expense of everyday South Carolinians?”
Senator Massey has been a key proponent of tort reform, particularly legislation that would make it harder for victims of negligence to hold businesses fully accountable. His proposals would limit the financial responsibility of at-fault parties and reduce legal protections for consumers, workers, and small businesses that rely on fair access to the courts.
“The people of South Carolina need transparency, not backroom deals,” the statement continued. “If Senator Massey wants to reshape our state’s legal system, he should start by answering a simple question: How much has he personally profited from defending the same corporate interests he’s now working to protect through legislation?”
The SCDP is calling for full disclosure of Senator Massey’s earnings from his legal work and demanding that he recuse himself from any legislation that presents a direct conflict of interest. South Carolinians deserve a justice system that works for everyone—not just powerful insiders.
