South Carolina state Sen. Overture Walker released the following statement on Republicans’ redistricting efforts:
"As we observe Memorial Day, it is important to remember that one of the earliest observances honoring fallen American service members took place right here in South Carolina, where newly freed citizens gathered to pay tribute to Union soldiers who gave their lives during the Civil War. That history serves as a reminder that our democracy is strongest when every voice is respected and every community is treated fairly.
"Most recently I voted against advancing the proposed congressional redistricting effort because I do not believe it is proper and prudent to divide communities that have longstanding shared interests simply for political convenience.
"The proposed map would split Richland County into three separate congressional districts, carving up municipalities and neighborhoods throughout the Midlands that share common concerns related to economic development, transportation, education, public safety, and infrastructure. Dividing our region in this way risks weakening the voice of Midlands residents in Washington and makes it more difficult for communities to advocate together on issues that directly impact their daily lives.
"At the same time, other large population centers like Greenville and Charleston would remain divided into only two districts while preserving stronger community continuity and protecting their shared interests. The people of Richland County should receive the same fairness and consideration.
"I believe redistricting should be approached with transparency, consistency, and respect for local communities, not rushed through under political pressure. The people of South Carolina deserve maps that prioritize representation and accountability over politics.
"Most importantly, I encourage every eligible voter, democrat or republican, to stay engaged, stay informed, and exercise their constitutional right to vote on Tuesday, May 26th. Your voice matters."
