COLUMBIA - State Sen. Darrell Jackson Sr., D-Richland, has introduced S.1040, a concurrent resolution requesting that the South Carolina Department of Transportation designate a portion of Interstate 77 in Richland County as the “President Barack H. Obama Highway.”
The resolution calls for the stretch of I-77 between U.S. Highway 1 and Interstate 20 to be named in honor of the former president. The measure now awaits consideration in the General Assembly.
“President Obama’s leadership inspired a generation and broke barriers that once seemed impossible,” Jackson said. “Designating this highway in his honor is a meaningful way for South Carolina to recognize his legacy and the impact he has had on our country.”
If approved, the South Carolina Department of Transportation would install appropriate markers along the designated portion of the highway.
The request comes a few weeks after the South Carolina House voted in favor of naming a section of I-73 after President Donald Trump.
