State Rep. JA Moore (D-Charleston) will hold a town hall in North Charleston next Monday, days after Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits could expire amid the federal government shutdown.
“Thousands of families in our community will be left out to dry if SNAP benefits expire this weekend,” Moore said. “During this uncertain time, it’s important that we come together as a community to find solutions so we can get through this as one. The federal government has failed us, but local government here at home still works for the people.”
Officials from the South Carolina Hospital Association, the Department of Public Health, the Department of Social Services, and the Department of Health and Human Services will join Moore at the town hall.
More than 500,000 South Carolinians rely on SNAP benefits, including nearly 30,000 households — roughly 9% of the population — in the tri-county area.
