Community advocate, nonprofit leader and political adviser Radia Baxter today announced her candidacy for the South Carolina House of Representatives District 116 seat. She will run as a Democrat.
A longtime community leader in the Charleston region, Baxter currently serves as chairwoman of the YWCA of Greater Charleston and has spent decades supporting community initiatives, advising political leaders and advocating for programs that expand opportunity for families across the Lowcountry.
Baxter said her campaign will focus on strengthening communities, expanding economic opportunity and ensuring that residents across District 116 have access to the resources needed to thrive.
“For years, I’ve worked behind the scenes organizing, supporting leaders and helping our community move forward,” Baxter said. “My work has always been rooted in service and in making sure our communities have the support and resources they need to thrive. Now I feel called to step forward and serve in a new way. I’m excited to run for this seat, and I will work hard to earn the trust and support of the people of District 116.”
A proud mother of three and cancer survivor, Baxter graduated from the College of Charleston in 2023 at age 44 and is currently completing an Executive Master of Business Administration program at the institution this spring.
Throughout her career, Baxter has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations in the Lowcountry and works professionally as a consultant to businesses throughout the Southeast. She said her consulting work focuses on responsible community development, affordable housing initiatives and social reform efforts designed to improve quality of life and economic opportunity.
“I have spent most of my adult life attending community meetings, mentoring others and listening to the needs of our neighborhoods,” Baxter added. “I didn’t do those things because I planned to run for office. I did them because service to the community is who I am. Now I am ready to bring that same commitment to the State House.”
