Hemp farmers, business owners, and consumers across South Carolina breathed a collective sigh of relief last week when H.3924 failed to advance on the House floor. Had it passed, the legislation would have significantly restricted the sale of hemp-derived products by limiting them to liquor stores and imposing additional regulations that many industry leaders argued would have devastated South Carolina's hemp sector.
While the bill's defeat marks an important victory, advocates say the work to establish thoughtful, long-term regulations is just beginning.
"While we just celebrated a win, the work is far from over," said Cody Callarman, Executive Director of One Way Forward SC.
