Bluffton - Mayra Rivera Vazquez has officially filed to run for U.S. Congress in South Carolina’s 1st District, becoming the first Latina in state history to seek the seat. She will run as a Democrat.
“Today, we’re making history—but I’m running to fight for families who feel ignored and squeezed by rising costs,” said Rivera Vazquez.
A longtime community advocate, she said she is centering her campaign on affordability, healthcare, and economic opportunity.
“I wake up like so many in this district—worried about the cost of living, healthcare, and the future we’re building,” she said. “Change happens when people refuse to wait any longer.”
Rivera Vazquez pledged to protect Social Security and Medicare, lower healthcare costs, create good-paying jobs, and build an economy that works for working families.
“The people of District One deserve a fighter who won’t let them down in Washington,” she said.
She also highlighted the importance of representation: “For young girls of color across South Carolina, especially Latina girls, this shows something new is possible. It’s an honor to carry that forward.”
“To anyone who’s been told their voice doesn’t matter—this campaign is for you,” she added. “SC-01 is ready for change, and together, we will win.”
