Democratic congressional candidate Mayra Rivera-Vázquez has earned the 2026 Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate Distinction, recognizing candidates who "support common-sense measures to reduce gun violence and protect families."
Rivera-Vázquez said the distinction "comes at a moment when the country is again confronting the deadly consequences of domestic violence and easy access to firearms, following the mass shooting in Louisiana over the weekend that authorities say began as a domestic dispute."
“South Carolinians know the consequences of loopholes in our gun laws. We have lived them,” said Rivera-Vázquez. “I believe in the Second Amendment. I also believe women and children deserve protection from abusers and dangerous gaps in the law. Those values belong together.”
Rivera-Vázquez called for stronger background checks, action to keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers, and "an end to the political excuses that have blocked reforms supported by an overwhelming majority of South Carolinians."
“Nearly 90 percent of South Carolinians support universal background checks,” Rivera-Vázquez said. “The public is ahead of the politicians on this. The Lowcountry deserves a representative with the courage to protect families, respect responsible gun ownership, and finally close loopholes that put lives at risk.”
Rivera-Vázquez is running for Congress in South Carolina’s 1st District. For more information, visit mayra4congress.com.
