Democratic congressional candidate Mayra Rivera-Vázquez released the following statement after today’s Supreme Court decision weakening a key protection of the Voting Rights Act:
“Today’s decision is a serious setback for voting rights and fair representation. No voter’s political power should be diluted because of race, and no community should have to fight harder just to be heard in our democracy.
"For communities across the South, this is not abstract. The Voting Rights Act exists because this country has a long history of shutting people out and making fair representation harder to achieve. We should be strengthening those protections, not weakening them.
"Our democracy is stronger when every voter has a fair voice, every community has equal access to the ballot box, and every citizen can trust that their vote counts. In congress, I will continue fighting to protect voting rights, expand participation, and ensure that our democracy works for everyone, not just the powerful.”
