Democrat Mac Deford, a candidate in the June 11th Democratic primary for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, today announced a plan aimed at tackling the issue of attainable, affordable housing.
"Affordable housing close to workplaces is not just a convenience; it is a necessity that enhances our quality of life," Deford said.
In his plan, Deford emphasizes that ensuring individuals have the opportunity to live near their workplace not only strengthens community bonds but also underpins a sustainable local economy.
"The shortage of affordable housing affects everyone, regardless of their housing situatiom" he said. "It leads to fewer workers in the hospitality sector, fewer police officers on our streets, fewer teachers, and fewer graduates who can afford to remain and contribute to the Lowcountry. Our commitment must be to develop housing solutions that are affordable and strategically located to nurture an economically thriving, vibrant community."
Deford proposes a multi-faceted approach to increase funding and support for affordable housing:
- Increasing Federal Funding: Advocating for more resources dedicated to the construction and maintenance of affordable housing units.
- Incentivizing the Private Sector: Implementing tax incentives and zoning allowances to encourage private sector participation in affordable housing.
- Expanding Housing First Initiatives: Focusing on providing stable housing to unhoused individuals to improve health and socioeconomic outcomes.
- Developing Age-Friendly Housing: Ensuring housing options are available that cater to the aging population, promoting independence and accessibility.
People should have the ability to live where they work, which reduces commuting times and congestion and increases the time they can spend with their families," Deford said.
