Community members and local organizations in the Lowcountry will gather Thursday, Jan. 8, at 5:30 p.m. for a protest in response to the fatal shooting of a legal observer Wednesday morning by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis.
The “No ICE! No Feds! Emergency Protest” will take place at Marion Square in downtown Charleston, with multiple organizations participating including the Charleston chapters of the Community Services Organization, Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO), 50501 South Carolina, Indivisible Summerville, Democratic Socialists of America, Students for a Democratic Society (CofC), the Lowcountry Action Committee, the Charleston Green Party, Free Palestine Charleston and the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
The event is set to include speeches from local organizers and community members advocating for justice and humane treatment of all individuals, regardless of immigration status.
“The Lowcountry will not remain silent while our law enforcement agencies continue to support and assist the hypocrisy and lawlessness of DHS and ICE,” shared local organizer Anthony Ribeiro. “The killing and detention of U.S. citizens without due process is no longer deniable, and this is a defining moment. We must choose – remain silent or take action. History will remember which side we stood on.”
