Leslie Skardon today announced her candidacy for Charleston City Council, District 12. As the CEO of a state-wide non-profit, a mom of twin boys, and a leader with a track record of service on James Island and across the city, Skardon says she is ready to serve on day one.
“This campaign is about service," she said. "It is about local issues and bringing our community together. Your City Council representative should be your first call when dealing with local issues. Whether it’s potholes, sidewalks, development or flooding, I will answer your call and be an effective voice to help improve our community’s day-to-day life.”
Skardon said her campaign has already raised $40,000.
“This is a grassroots campaign focused on individual conversations with voters throughout the community," she said. "Over the next three months, we will be knocking on thousands of doors to share our message with local families, and listen to their concerns."
With a deep background in environmental sustainability and conservation, Skardon said preserving green spaces and way of life is a top priority, while preventing irresponsible development.
“Raising twin boys on James Island is the privilege of a lifetime," she said. "As your representative, we will champion our quality of life and protect our community for generations to come."
Skardon serves as a Commissioner for the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission and was appointed to the City of Charleston Commission on Women. She is the founder of “C3: Connecting the Community for Change - Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders” - a program that teaches the civil rights history of South Carolina and builds bridges among students of diverse backgrounds.
She also served on the International African American Museum's Interfaith Advisory Committee and as a board member for the Charleston and State League of Women Voters.
Charleston City Council District 12 includes the portions of central and southern James Island that are in the City of Charleston.
