KJ Atwood, a Mount Pleasant resident and small business owner, this week announced his candidacy in the Democratic primary for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District.
Atwoord release the following statement:
“We are in an urgent moment. We are witnessing an unprecedented era of federal overreach; people are afraid to leave their homes at the sight of masked militias. Life in the Lowcountry is unaffordable for many. Reckless spending has caused rampant inflation. Healthcare should be a source of security, not stress. Technological innovation is growing exponentially, and our government needs to have representatives who can keep up with the unique challenges and opportunities of our time. All of this is happening as people in Washington get richer and richer through a broken system that doesn’t hold our politicians accountable.
"We need to ensure that we build a society for people to flourish in our country, in South Carolina, and on our coast. The Lowcountry should be a place where housing, education, and healthcare are accessible. When we come together, we can build a South Carolina where our diverse working and middle class communities are thriving instead of struggling to get by. We need everyday people to have a voice, and that’s why I’m running for Congress: to build a future that our children will be proud of. Many politicians want to maintain the status quo - but I’m over it, as are almost all of you. If we want things to change, we have to be the change. I’m a husband, father, business owner, community organizer and advocate. I commit to hearing your voice and uplifting it throughout this race. Representation should be people first. Our Country, Carolina, and Coastline need to get on track. Join our movement today."
K.J. Atwood has lived in South Carolina for more than 20 years. He owns and operates a digital agency. He resides in Mount Pleasant with his wife, Caitlyn, and their new daughter.
