Joy Brown, a lifelong West Ashley resident, public education advocate and parent of four Charleston County School District students, has announced her candidacy for the Charleston County School District Board of Trustees, representing District 7.
Brown said her campaign is rooted in a lifelong commitment to public education and a belief that every student deserves access to high-quality learning opportunities in a supportive and accountable school system. Having attended Charleston County public schools herself and later raising four children in the district, she brings both personal experience and years of community leadership to the race.
For nearly a decade, Brown has served students, families, educators and the broader Charleston County community through a variety of leadership roles. Her experience includes serving as PTA president, School Improvement Council chair, vice president of advocacy for the South Carolina PTA, director of education for both the Charleston League of Women Voters and the Charleston NAACP, and vice chair of the Charleston County School District 10 Constituent School Board, where she served for five years. She continues to support local schools through volunteer leadership with the Charleston County School of the Arts and by mentoring and tutoring students.
“Public education has shaped my life and my family's future,” Brown said. “I understand the challenges our schools face, but I also know the incredible opportunities that exist when we put students first and work together with families, educators and our community.”
If elected, Brown said her priorities will include keeping students at the center of every decision, supporting and retaining high-quality educators, promoting transparency and accountability in district governance, and ensuring taxpayer resources are invested responsibly to improve student achievement and educational outcomes.
