COLUMBIA, SC — State Senators Deon Tedder (D-North Charleston) and Ed Sutton (D-Charleston) released the following joint statement after production resumed at Volvo’s Ridgeville plant, following a temporary shutdown caused by parts shortages. Though workers have returned, the senators warned that these disruptions—fueled by reckless trade policies and tariffs—should never be allowed to threaten South Carolina jobs again.
Senator Deon Tedder: “We’re relieved to see production back online and workers returning to the line at Volvo. But let’s be clear — this disruption, and the layoffs that followed, should never have happened in the first place. South Carolina families shouldn’t be caught in the crossfire of failed trade wars. We need leadership that puts working people first, protects our economy, and brings stability to the manufacturing sector.”
Senator Ed Sutton: “Trump’s reckless tariffs are costing South Carolina jobs. Volvo’s temporary shutdown in Ridgeville and the recent layoffs are a direct result of supply chain disruptions driven by erratic trade policies. In the Lowcountry, we need stability — not pointless political stunts that put local manufacturing and working families at risk. This can’t be allowed to happen again.”
