The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 776 in Charleston announced its official endorsement of Sylvia Wright for South Carolina Superintendent of Education, citing her strong commitment to public schools and support for career and technical education pathways.
“Our local endorsed Sylvia Wright for Superintendent of Education because she believes in keeping our public tax dollars in our public schools,” said James Hollman, Business Manager of IBEW Local 776. “She understands that a strong, fully funded public school system is the foundation of healthy communities and a strong workforce.”
Wright, a North Charleston native and graduate of South Carolina’s public schools, has more than 20 years of experience as a classroom teacher and education leader. She attended Lambs Elementary, Goodwin Elementary, Oakbrook Middle School, and graduated from Fort Dorchester High School. She went on to earn advanced degrees from Columbia College and The Citadel and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
“As a teacher, military spouse, and parent, I’ve walked in the shoes of many South Carolinians,” Wright said. “From Sumter to Charleston, I’ve seen the challenges and the promise in our classrooms. As Superintendent, I will work to recruit and retain the best educators, create safe and rigorous learning environments, and ensure every education dollar is used effectively for our children’s future.”
IBEW Local 776 emphasized Wright’s support for building trades apprenticeships and hands-on learning opportunities as another key factor in their endorsement.
“Sylvia Wright supports the building trades apprenticeships because for those students who like to work with their hands, our training lets people earn while they learn and lead to good paying jobs with benefits,” Hollman said.
Wright’s campaign platform highlights strengthening public schools, expanding career and technical education, and ensuring that every district—rural, suburban, and urban—has the resources it needs for students to succeed.
“I’m running to restore the promise of public education in South Carolina,” Wright said. “I’m grateful for the support of IBEW Local 776 and look forward to working with parents, educators, labor, and community leaders across our state to build a school system that prepares every child for college, careers, and life.”
