Longtime community leader Greg Perry has officially announced his candidacy for North Charleston City Council District 1.
“As a son of North Charleston, I’m running because our city deserves someone who knows it, someone who loves it, and someone who will fight for it,” Perry said.
Perry has spent nearly two decades serving the people of North Charleston. In 2009, he founded a nonprofit to help single mothers access education and job opportunities. Since then, he has continued serving as a youth basketball coach, volunteer chaplain at the Al Cannon Detention Center, and community advocate.
He previously served as chair of the Charleston County Democratic Party and now serves as co-chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party’s Rules Committee.
Perry also serves as board chair of a nonprofit working to reduce gun violence and build safer neighborhoods and sits on the board of directors for the Mediation and Meeting Center of Charleston, which provides pro bono and low-cost conflict resolution services. He also serves on the Legislative Committee of the South Carolina Fair Lending Alliance, which works to end predatory lending statewide.
Professionally, Perry works for a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that supports affordable housing and small business growth in low-income communities. He also has experience as a K–12 educator and adjunct professor.
“I see how access and opportunity can change lives — and I’m prepared to bring that same focus and urgency to City Council,” Perry said.
The District 1 race is a special election, and Perry emphasized that his campaign will rely on grassroots support.
“Campaigns like ours are powered by people — not PACs,” Perry said.
