Mac Deford, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, attorney and Democratic candidate for Congress in South Carolina’s 1st District, will host two economic and Social Security town halls with former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley on Oct. 29 and Oct. 30.
O’Malley, who served as Maryland’s governor from 2007 to 2015, later led the Social Security Administration under President Joe Biden. He previously served as mayor of Baltimore, on the Baltimore City Council and as an assistant state’s attorney for the city.
The town halls will address how economic policies and threats to Social Security are affecting the financial security of everyday Americans.
“Social Security is not just a government program — it is a solemn promise between generations of Americans,” O’Malley said. “We are witnessing an assault on that promise from leaders who would rather cut benefits or weaken the program than find solutions. What I see in Mac Deford is a leader who understands what’s at stake and has the courage to fight for the retirement security of every American.”
Deford said Trump’s policies are harming Lowcountry families. “His tariffs are driving up costs for working people and seniors alike, while his allies openly threaten to gut Social Security,” Deford said. “That’s a one-two punch that our communities cannot afford. I’ve served this country in uniform, and I’ll serve again in Congress by standing up to these attacks and making sure the people of the Lowcountry get leaders who put them first.”
The Charleston town hall will take place Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of James Island Community Life Center, 1110 Camp Road. The Beaufort County town hall will follow Thursday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort and Spa, Two Grasslawn Ave.
Both events are free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.defordforcongress.com/events.
