On Saturday Jan. 24 a Democracy in Action event will take place at Brittlebank Park (185 Lockwood Drive, Charleston) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The event is organized by the Charleston Resistance Coalition.
Organizers say the coalition was created in response to "the illegal, unconstitutional, and inhumane actions of the Trump Administration." Members include legacy organizations such as Charleston Indivisible, Charleston Democratic Socialists of America, and the Dorchester County Democratic Party, as well as recently formed resistance groups like 50501 The People’s Movement, Silence is Not an Option, the Charleston ICE Hotline, and the Charleston Visibility Brigade.
The Democracy in Action event aims to broaden this coalition. Nineteen local groups and organizations are participating*. Another goal is to engage people of conscience in the resistance by encouraging them to volunteer for causes that match their skills, gifts, and interests. The event will feature speakers, tabling, and sign-waving along Brittlebank.
Tracey Tapp, a Volunteer Organizer for 50501 said, “This is an all hands-on-deck moment for our democracy. No one can do everything, but everyone must do something. This event will help people connect with local organizations that support justice, the rule of law, our common humanity, and democratic values.”
